Schaafsma Heating & Cooling

Schaafsma Heating and Cooling was founded in 1905 by Marinus Schaafsma as Schaafsma Hardware and Heating. In 1918, the heating and hardware were split, and Schaafsma Heating moved to Ionia Ave NW where it remained until February 2007, when they moved to their new location on N Park St NW. The company continued to grow and thrive due to its reputation of providing quality service at a reasonable price. The company stayed in the family until 1993 when Marv Schaafsma, a grandson of the founder, retired. While Marv stayed involved with the business for many more years, his longtime partner Ray Carpenter assumed control until he unexpectedly passed away. Not wanting to see an institution like Schaafsma fade away, three longtime employees, Kevin Walsh, Bill Krestakos and Eric Pannill who had worked for both Marv and Ray, purchased the company from Ray's widow and have continued the tradition of service excellence. Eric has since retired but the company continues with a commitment to excellence. This company has survived two world wars, the great depression and 20 different Presidents. The company has continued growing and is one of the largest residential and light commercial companies in the Grand Rapids area. While Marv is retired from the company, he was asked to participate on its board of directors and continues to pass along his insight on maintaining the family tradition.
